Otake's extensive martial arts experience started in the early 50's with judo, then karate and kenpo (he was one of Ed Parker's first students). He then studied with Tak Kubota of the International Karate Association, earning the rank of 6th Dan. Otake taught the Gosoku Ryu system (IKA) from 1967 to 1972 and trained several champions including Manuel Gonzales and Tony Tulleners. He co-founded Shindokai with John Sell, to concentrate on those movements and techniques that are the most efficient and effective for self -defense.
